Respecting Differences

This activity will help students to see respect as a valued trait and to encourage understanding of individual differences.

Introduce the meaning of respect.

Convey to the students that respect means treating others the way in which you would like to be treated – regardless of their differences.

Have students name something that he/she likes. Ask the students to share their responses with their neighbor. Are their answers the same? Explain that sometimes people tend to like different things, yet they should all be treated with the same respect.

Ask students to name other differences they may have with one another.

Divide your class into groups. Have each group create a poster that has a slogan about what respect means to them and honors the differences among people.
